
As a mother of three energetic boys, a wife, a daughter, a best friend and a business owner navigating life in Australia, I know how overwhelming it can feel - especially when you’re juggling ADHD in the family. Some days, it feels like we’re caught in a whirlwind, and amidst it all, I’ve found a few little tips that help me keep my head above water.
I don’t know about you, but some days I find myself questioning if I’m a bad mother or a terrible friend. But you know what? Life is hectic, and we’re all fighting our own battles. I’ve quickly learnt that those who love you will understand, and those who don’t… well, sometimes it’s okay to say goodbye. Trust me, it doesn’t always feel great but making YOU a priority is key! Remember, you’re not alone in this journey. It’s okay to only do what you can do. Sometimes, putting yourself first isn’t selfish; it’s a necessity to keep your family (and mindset) together.
With five of us in the family having ADHD, each with our own unique traits-it can be tough! Especially in the evenings after long school days and when the meds wear off! To cope as a family, we’ve developed a few strategies that make life easier. One of our favourite routines is setting clear expectations and breaking tasks into smaller, manageable steps. This helps prevent overwhelm and makes it easier for all of us to stay focused. We also use visual reminders around the house, like charts or lists, to keep everyone on track and accountable.
In the evenings, here are some things we enjoy doing as a family that help us 😊:
- Wind Down with a Consistent Schedule: We like to establish a regular bedtime routine that starts at the same time each evening. This helps signal to our bodies that it’s time to relax.
- Relaxing the Mind: About an hour before bed, we opt for calming activities like reading a book, journaling, or listening to soothing music.
- Create a Relaxation Space: As soon as we get home, we set up a cozy corner in our family room with soft lighting, comfortable blankets, and of course, we light one of our fave Three Suns crystal-infused candles. Lighting a candle can transform your space into a haven for relaxation and self-care.
- Mindfulness or Meditation: If one of the boys or I feel anxious, we love to spend a few minutes practicing mindfulness or meditation. This can be as simple as focusing on our breath or using guided meditation apps tailored for relaxation.
- Self-Care Rituals: We all incorporate self-care activities like a warm bath or massage. For an extra touch of tranquility, we always spray our Hunti' room spray in our room before bedtime. The calming scents, along with the amethyst crystals, help create a peaceful atmosphere.
- Prepare for Tomorrow: This step is crucial for us! We spend a few minutes organising for the next day—laying out clothes, packing school bags, or writing a to-do list. This helps clear our minds of worries and makes mornings smoother.
By incorporating these self-care and wellness routines into our evenings, we create a peaceful transition from the hustle of the day to a restful night. Remember, not everything we do may work for you-it’s all about finding what works best for you and your family!
